Interlibrary Loan Borrowing Services Printable Version

The Interlibrary Loan Department (404-727-5816) assists library users in obtaining health resources NOT available at any Emory Library. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services are offered in support of research, teaching and patient care services at Emory University, and are available to the current faculty, staff, and students of Emory at no charge except when RUSH and/or copyright fees apply. ILL services are also available to current staff at Emory University Hospital and Crawford Long Hospital.

How do I submit an Interlibrary Loan request?
First check EUCLID, Emory's online catalog, before you submit your request. Please ask for help at the Information Desk if you have incomplete information or if you need help in determining ownership. Requests must be submitted electronically via ILLiad.
  • Click on the Interlibrary Loan button in EUCLID on the web.
  • Enter your Emory User Name and Password
  • If you are a first-time ILLiad user, complete the registration form.
  • From the ILLiad main menu select the type of request you wish to submit, and enter complete and accurate information about the item.
How long does it take?
ILL staff begin processing most requests within one working day, if your information is accurate and complete. Standard turnaround time is 5-7 days for articles and 2-4 weeks for books.

What factors affect turnaround time?
Although we attempt to fill all requests as quickly as possible, we do not normally borrow the following types of materials:
  • Textbooks used in course work
  • Standardized test preparation books (i.e. GMAT, MCAT, TOEFL etc.)
  • Recently published material
  • Entire issues or volumes of journals
  • Reference materials
  • Rare books or original manuscripts
  • Some dissertations or theses
  • Media material or computer software

How do I receive my Interlibrary Loan materials?
We will notify you by email or phone as soon as your materials arrive. You can pick up your ILL materials in the photocopy office of the Health Sciences Library, we can send your materials to the Grady Library, we can mail them to your home or campus address, or deliver them electronically via the web.

How can I receive my interlibrary loan articles electronically?
You can choose to receive articles via electronic delivery by editing your User Information in ILLiad (click the last button on the ILLiad main menu). Electronic Delivery Preference is the last item on the Registration and User Information pages.

Once you have selected electronic delivery in ILLiad, you will be notified by email when your articles are available for viewing in PDF format. To view an electronic document, login to ILLiad, click the Electronic Documents button under Review Requests, and then click on the transaction number of the document you wish to view.

Electronic documents will be available via ILLiad for 30 days from the day that they are posted to the web. You can delete them at any time during this 30-day period.

Can all of my interlibrary loan requests be delivered electronically?
No. We still receive some articles in paper format (via mail or fax). We will continue to notify you to pick up these articles at the usual location.
